While I am still in the mood to provide some more information on the league that I am playing, below are the instructions on how to play Ed Schroeder's old DOS collection. Which you can download from the Link below.

http://rebel13.nl/download/more%20dos%20oldies.html

There are quite a few old classic chess programs here. You should have a lot fun trying them all out, if you have not tried them before. Which I suspect most of you have, but perhaps some of you have not.

The program uses DOSBox with an enhancement called D-Fend Reloaded written by Alexander Herzog. Playing the programs in this way makes it really easy and fun to use. The chess games install on my computer full screen. However after the chess games have fully loaded I then use the ALT and TAB keys on my computer to minimize the program and then I reopen the program. Now the chess game will be inside a window which you can resize to suit your preference.

Ok here are the most simple instructions on how to use D-Fend Reloaded.

That was so easy! Maybe next time I will take a stab at explaining how the Amiga and Atari Emulators work.

Game 5 in Round 7 was between Novag Scorpio 68000 against DOSBox Grandmaster.

[Event "Major Swiss Comp. Chess League - Div. 4"]
[Site "Alabama"]
[Date "2017"]
[Round "7"]
[White "Novag Scorpio, 30S."]
[Black "DB Grandmaster Active, 60/30."]
[Result "0-1"]
[ECO "A21"]
[WhiteElo "2046"]
[BlackElo "2100"]
[Annotator "Spacious-Mind"]
[PlyCount "163"]
[EventDate "2017"]
[EventType "swiss (rapid)"]
[EventRounds "15"]
[EventCountry "USA"]

1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 d6 3. Nf3 f5 4. d4 e4 5. Nd2 {DB Grandmaster Active out of book} Bd7 {Novag Scorpio out of book} 6. e3 c5 7. dxc5 Nf6 8. cxd6

[fen]rn1qkb1r/pp1b2pp/3P1n2/5p2/2P1p3/2N1P3/PP1N1PPP/R1BQKB1R w KQkq - 0 8[/fen]

This game was a weird one. Already here after 7. ... Nf6?! Grandmaster Chess gives up a pawn to white with 8. cxd6.

Qb6 9. Be2 Qxd6 10. b3 Be7 11. Bb2 O-O 12. Nd5 Nxd5 13. cxd5 b5 14. Nf1 Na6 15. Ng3 Nc7 16. Nh5 Rf7

[fen]r5k1/p1nbbrpp/3q4/1p1P1p1N/4p3/1P2P3/PB2BPPP/R2QK2R w KQ - 0 17[/fen]

But soon thereafter on move 17, Novag Scorpio decides to sacrifice a Knight and Bishop for a Rook and Pawn with 17. Nxg7?! which now gave the advantage to Grandmaster Chess.

17. Nxg7 Rxg7 18. Bxg7 Kxg7 19. Rc1 Nxd5 20. O-O Bf6 21. Qd2 Be5 22. Rfd1 Bxh2+ 23. Kf1 Be6 24. Bxb5 Qb6 25. Bc6 Rd8 26. g3 Bxg3 27. Qb2+ Kg6 28. Bxd5 Rxd5 29. Rxd5 Bxd5 30. fxg3 Qxe3 31. Rc3 Qh6 32. [fen]8/8/8/R2bk3/4p2p/1P2K3/P7/8 w - - 0 45[/fen]

But Grandmaster Chess did not know what to do with its advantage and by the time we reach this endgame position, it seemed that Novag Scorpio has won the game. Just a few more moves I thought at first. But then seeing Black's pawns on e4 and h4, I also had this nagging feeling from past dedicated experiences that this could end up becoming long and arduous.

45. Ra6 Kf5 46. Rh6 Kg4 47. Rg6+ Kf5 48. Rg7 Be6 49. Rh7 Kg4 50. Re7 Bd5 51. Kd4 Ba8 52. Ra7 Bc6 53. Rg7+ Kf3 54. Rf7+ Kg4 55. Rc7 Ba8 56. Rg7+ Kf4 57. Ra7 Bc6 58. Rc7 Be8 59. Rh7 Kg5 60. a4 Bh5 61. Rg7+ Kf4 62. Rh7 Kg4 63. Rc7 Kf4 64. a5 h3 65. Rh7

[fen]8/7R/8/P6b/3Kpk2/1P5p/8/8 w - - 0 65[/fen]

Therefore Novag Scorpio for twenty torturous moves dithered around never really understanding that a b4 pawn advancement even at the expense of giving up the a3 Pawn would have been fine and the easy route to success. Instead now after 65. Rh7? Grandmaster Chess gets to win the game with 65. ... e3 which the GM had no problems in spotting.

e3 66. Rxh5 e2 67. Rh4+ Kg5 68. Re4 h2 69. Re5+ Kg4 70. Rxe2 h1=Q 71. Rd2 Qa1+ 72. Ke4 Qxa5 73. Rg2+ Kh3 74. Rg6 Qb4+ 75. Ke5 Qc3+ 76. Kf5 Qxb3 77. Rd6 Qf7+ 78. Ke4 Kg4 79. Rd4 Qe6+ 80. Kd3+ Kf5 81. Rd6

[fen]8/8/3Rq3/5k2/8/3K4/8/8 w - - 0 81[/fen]

The final weirdness, Novag Scorpio ponders with 81. Rd6 and just gives up its Rook? I think it must have decided to just give up?

OK GM would have figured out the Queen vs Rook ending and it saved me having to play another 20 or so moves, so that is a relief.

Qxd6+ 82. Kc3 0-1

Anyway I have been playing Novag Scorpio with its default setting of Select 3. Maybe I should change it Select 4 or 5 for the last few games?

Best regards

The ratings shows Grandmaster and Scorpio as roughly equal, but Scorpio was outplayed in this endgame. I wonder how Scorpio would have played that endgame on Level 4? But, it is a 30 sec/move competition and maybe just play it out that way.

Enjoying your commentary and tournament,

Hi Dave,

Yes level 3 is 30 seconds per move. Select 3 is something different, Scorpio same as Diablo, Super Experts and Super Fortes has 9 style settings with Scorpio the default is Select 3. However most people prefer to set them to Select 4 or Select 5 depending on Model because those Select settings are meant to be a little better or stronger.

For 46 moves Cyrus seemed to be ahead. Here for the first time however Chess Player 2150 gets a great opportunity to change the outcome of the game instantly with the move 46. ... b4! But CP2150 did not see it.

[fen]8/8/2p2K2/2Pk1PN1/1p1B3p/2P5/r7/8 w - - 0 49[/fen]

Three moves later CP2150 gets a second chance to play b4 and this time sees it and following this move wins quickly.

A nice Atari CP2150 win.

We called them exaggerators, we called them deceivers and many other unkind names when we coughed up the dough, unwrapped the box, played the game and complained bitterly about the misrepresented strength of the chess program.

But guess what, they were Visionaries! They could see into the future and they knew that someday 2150 really would mean 2150 and more! :P

Amazing regards..

After CM2100 played 35. b3, the best chance for Krypton Challenge to win the game fell in this position. The correct move for Black in this position would have been 35. ... gxf4+. This would have made it difficult for the white King to be in two places with either having to defend Black's queenside pawn majority or protecting a later pawn cleanup threat from black's King on the king side. Anyway Krypton Challenge missed this opportunity.

And just a few moves later Krypton Challenge confirms its endgame weaknesses with 43. ... b4? in this position that instantly loses the game. I guess you could argue not enough search depth. Which in this case is probably true because in its next move when it played 44. ... Kc4 it had already recognized its mistake.
