The game was evenly played with hardly any mistakes. CP2150 did seem to have missed an opportunity to win the game though as 39. Kg3 was not so good. In the above position 39. ... Bc6! looked like the best move forcing the exchange of the white Bishops and might have won the game for CP2150.

It is a pity to see Witington, the author of these programs, not only retired -in a hamlet in France- but totally uninterested in the field. i talked with him by FB and told him about this site and the performance of his programs and he never got interest at all.

I agree it is a pity. These programs at a new speed really show their potential.

This was a hard fought game. In this position Constellation Quattro should have exchanged Rooks with 54. ... Rxa2. I was surprised when it did not do that. It would give Quattro the passed pawn and the threat of getting its Rook down to the second rank with Rb2 at some point threatening to collapse White's kingside pawns. Ah well a missed opportunity.

And yet another Grandmaster draw played by Novag Scorpio. For me Novag Scorpio has easily been the most disappointing chess computer so far in this tournament. The top 10 finishers get promoted into Division 3 and at the moment it seems that Novag Scorpio has no chance of making it through.

The game turned into Cyrus's favor in this position. 30. ... f5! was the best move that would have provided Black with a slight advantage. The move that was played 30. ... f6? was not good and it gave Cyrus the edge it needed to win the game.

Excalibur Igor played a string of second choice moves but up to this point DB Now had been generous by letting it all slide. The above position however was the final straw. 32. Qe3 of 32. Na5 would both have been fine moves, but 32. Nd2? was bad as it pinned the Queen after 32. ... Bh6!

ROUND 9 RESULTS

Image

Wow that was a bad round for dedicated computers. The only dedicated winner was Saitek Corona!

TABLE AFTER 9 ROUNDS

Image

With 3 rounds to go, it is becoming a little unclear which, if any dedicated computer will finish in the top 10 promotion spots.

I don't know if anybody can catch Amiga 68060 Chess Player 2150, so now it seems to be all about who finishes second and who will get promoted by finishing in the top 10.

The destruction starts after a YChess 1.09 blunder. 15. Nxf7? was pretty poor and Atari Sargon 3 should have just played 15. ... Rxf7! with a good advantage. However Atari's search depth of about 7 ply was insufficient to see this as a viable option and instead played 15. ... Qe8? which loses the Queen straight away.

Krypton Challenge had a good advantage, leading by a Rook for a Bishop and Pawn. In this position it seemed that Krypton Challenge might breakthrough with 42. Rd8!, threatening Rb8 and winning the b-pawn. But it obviously missed this opportunity amongst many others.

42. g4 Be6 43. Rd8 Qe7 44. Rd2 Bd5

[fen]8/1p2q1k1/1Qp2p1p/3b2p1/1P4P1/P4P2/3R2PK/8 w - - 0 45[/fen]

Mystifyingly Krypton Challenge in the above position now plays 45. Kg3? which loses the Rook after 45. ... Qe1+!

[fen]8/3Q4/2p2pkp/3b2p1/1P3qP1/P4P1K/6P1/8 w - - 0 49[/fen]

Now leading by a Bishop for a Pawn, it is Sakkara Vega's turn to be clueless on what to do to find a win. 49. ... h5! was the right move in this position which would have at least threatened to break up the pawns defending the King.

To show ya'all that this is serious stuff, below is the entry fee that each contestant had to pay to enter this tournament.

Image

And of course they have to play on specific boards based on their ranking in the Tournament:

Image

And, when the Tournament is complete I have to send a full report to USCF:

Image

And, I have to send one to FIDE:

Image

And, this report includes a full dossier of each Tournament entrant:

Image

Being a tournament organizer is not easy. In fact it is hard work and the pay is low and all the entry fees go to pay taxes and feed the kids!! 8)

Siberian 2.15 had lots of opportunities to win this game but Atari 68060-32 MHz Sargon 3 managed to hang around to pick up a draw.

In round 11 Game 5 DOSBox Chess Champion 2175 played against Fidelity 68000 Mach III Master.

Mach III Master's position is in a mess. From this point onwards Chess Champion 2175's combinations were just irresistible.

That was a comfortable win for DOS Box Chess Champion 2175.

Round 11 Game 6 was between DOSBox Chessmaster 2000 against Atari 68060-32 MHz Chess Player 2150.

I couldn't figure this game out. As soon as Chessmaster 2000 got out of book, it played 11. Ne6? sacrificing a Knight for a Pawn?

Well after this move Chessmaster 2000 started to put a lot or pressure on Chess Player 2150. But it seemed inevitable that CP2150 would win this game.

Here finally Atari 68060-32MHz Chess Player 2150 cracked under all the pressure and played 41. ... g5? Which was a mistake. I guess CP2150 wanted to keep the g-pawn and did not see that hidden white Rook on A3!

Anyway DB Chessmaster 2000 checkmates CP2150 8 moves later.

Amiga Chessmaster 2100 was up by a Queen for a Rook and 2 Pawns. But amazingly couldn't quite figure out how to win this game. For example in the above position 46. h4! would have been the winning move.

46. Bf3 R2e3 47. Ba8 Re2 48. Bf3 R2e3 49. Ba8 Re2 50. Bf3 {Draw by 3 x repetition} 1/2-1/2

Game ended in a draw through 3x repetition of position.
