Interesting. So CCS (1994) is weaker than CP2150 (1990) in your tests? Is this only based on your 68060 testing, or is it relevant for 68000 as well?
Thank you for an interesting game.

It is relevant comparing 68060 against DOS Pentium 90. You cant really compare DOS CP2150. As these tests are showing, some 68000 programs were better written than the DOS counterparts. The problem with 68,000 is that it was too slow. Amiga had 8 Mhz which was the equivalent of a 6502 playing at something like 4 Mhz. Much too slow especially when you consider the graphics etc running in the background.

Now interesting to compare is for example lets assume Amiga emulator runs at around 68060 100 MHz, how does this compare to Pentium 90?

You would have to do a MIPS comparison between the two.

I show the following:

Pentium 90 = 169 MIPS
AM68060 100 MHz = 147 MIPS
AT68060 33 MHz = 48 MIPS.

Round 11 Game 1:

AM68060 Sargon 3 - DB Grandmaster Active

RESULT: 0-1

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]4r3/p3k1b1/6pp/3B4/7n/1N2P3/PP1B2PP/6K1 w - - 0 32[/fen]

This game shows that AM68060 Sargon 3 is beatable by the competition in this league after all. AM68060 Sargon 3 started the game with an 1. f4 Bird Opening and struggled throughout to find any kind of equality. Finally in the above position there seemed a possibility that AM68060 Sargon 3 had gotten itself out of its mess with a Bishop and 2 pawns as compensation for a Rook. In the above position 32. Bb4+ was the correct move to keep the game balanced and at this point perhaps even slightly favoring White. AM68060 Sargon 3 made a mistake playing 32. Bc3? from which it could not recover after DB Grandmaster Active exchanged Bishops with the next move and at the same time broke up the two queenside pawns.

DB Grandmaster Active played well in this game and shows that its slow climb up the table is justified.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/p1q5/8/3k4/8/P7/1KN5/8 w - - 0 57[/fen]

[fen]rnbq1b1r/p2p1kp1/2p2n1p/4P3/2p1P3/2N5/PP3PPP/R1BQKB1R w KQ - 0 9[/fen]

DB YChess 1.09 was really outclassed in this game after choosing a bad English opening line called the Bellon Gambit (had to look that one up myself). Right out of the book the above position arises and DB YChess 1.09 is already behind. In this position 9. ... d5 was the best of all bad moves. DB YChess 1.09 played 9. ... Ng8? and promptly is in a big mess after DB Kallisto 1.83 correctly played 10. Qf3+!

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]4r3/pp3b2/5k2/4r3/6R1/2N5/1P4PP/2K4R w - - 0 27[/fen]

Novag Sapphire II earned a draw in this game with good defence. DB Rex 2.30 was a pawn up and perhaps this position might have been the best chance for DB Rex 2.30 with the move 27. h4! Instead DB Rex 2.30 played 27. Rf4+ and this small opportunity went bye bye.

FINAL POSITION

AM68060 CC2175 stands positionally better. AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.00 made a mistake playing 18. ... Be6? in this position as this encouraged the move 19. d5! which gave AM68060 CC2175 a really good game. Perhaps better would have been 18. ... Bf8 or 18. ... Bf6.

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]r3kb1r/pp2n1pp/2p1qp2/8/8/2N1B3/PPP1QPPP/3RR1K1 w kq - 0 16[/fen]

AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive had a massive opportunity to win this game. In this position both the moves 16. Qd3 or 16. Qh5 were great. DB Sargon 5 had all sorts of trouble. Unfortunately for AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive, it saw none of this and played 16. Bc5 and allowed the exchange of Queens which was no where near as good.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]R1n2b1r/2k3p1/2p2p1p/1p6/3B4/2N5/PPP2PPP/6K1 w - - 0 25[/fen]

In this position AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive has a small advantage but only with the move 25. Ne4. But AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive played 25. a3? and the game switched in favor of DB Sargon 5.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/8/8/6PP/nk6/1p3P2/1K6 w - - 0 58[/fen]

DB Complete Chess System 1.17 - Millennium Chess Genius

https://lichess.org/uA5FIK2m

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]8/8/p4NK1/4k2p/1P5P/P5n1/8/8 w - - 0 66[/fen]

Poor Millennium Chess Genius has been struggling of late resulting in some defeats. In this game Millennium Chess Genius also struggled. In this position DB Complete Chess System 1.17 is ahead by a pawn, but makes a mistake with the move 66. Nxh5? that gives Millennium Chess Genius a lifeline for a draw. Both the moves 66. a4 or 66. Kg5 would have won easily.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]8/8/p7/4knKN/1P5P/P7/8/8 w - - 0 67[/fen]

So now a couple of moves later, Millennium Chess Genius has to sacrifice his Knight iwth 67. ... Nxh4! and then quickly chase down the two pawns to draw. Unfortunately MCG did not see it the same way and played 67. ... Nd4? and loses.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/7K/p7/5k2/1P6/P7/3N4/8 w - - 0 82[/fen]

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r1bbnrk1/pp3ppp/4p3/4P3/4NB2/8/PP2BPPP/R4RK1 w - - 0 15[/fen]

DB Chessmaster 2000 struggled in this game after the opening. This was the last position of this game where DB Chessmaster 2000 had a chance for some sort of equality. 15. ... Bd7! was the correct move in this position in order to get the Bishops into play. DB Chessmaster 2000 played 15. ... f6 which just made the game a lot easier for DB Psion Chess 1.01.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]6Q1/1B1k4/5K2/8/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 64[/fen]

The game slightly favored DB Chess Friend upto this point. Here DB Chess Friend played 28. ... Rc2? This immediatly gives AT68060-32 Sargon 3 a fairly easy win because of the threat of a passed pawn supported by a Bishop move to b5 which DB Chess Friend cannot stop..

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]3r2k1/2qr2p1/3bp1Rp/ppn2p2/7P/2P1BN2/PPQ2PP1/5RK1 w - - 0 23[/fen]

Saitek Master Chess continues to get beaten up in this Tournament. Saitek Master Chess plays 23. ... Kf7? in this position which does absolutely nothing and helps to encourage the move 24. h5!

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]3r4/2qr1kp1/4p1Rp/2n2p1P/1pQN4/4B3/PP3PPb/5R1K w - - 0 29[/fen]

Here is another example. The position is already bad but Saitek Master Chess makes its plight even worse with 29. ... Rd5? as this encourages the move 30. f4! And so the game continued going from bad to worse.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]2r4k/5ppp/p1N5/2R4b/8/2Q2P2/PPP4q/2K5 w - - 0 27[/fen]

AM68060 Checkmate Normal had just blundered playing 26. ... Bh5? giving AT68060-32 Checkmate Normal a chance to equalize with 27. b4! Unfortunately AT68060-32 Checkmate Normal blundered right back with 27. Rf5 after which AM68060 Checkmate Normal played 27. ... Qh1+ which should have already been played 1 move earlier.

FINAL POSITION

As usual it is just too easy to beat DB Chess Fiz 0.16. The above position is pretty though as it encourages a rook sacrifice with 31. Rxa7! with checkmate to follow later. All this of course AT68060-32 Chess Simulator played.

DB Max Rubin played all of 17 moves before it played one of its expected blunders. This time it was the move 18. dxe6? which promptly loses the Knight after 18. ... Qg5!

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/7p/1p2k3/p1p1pp1p/2P4P/1P3PP1/3b2K1/8 w - - 0 47[/fen]

This was a hard fought game. DB Kallisto 1.83 had the advantage throughout because of an extra pawn. In this position DB Grandmaster Active perhaps may have squeezed a draw or at least make it very difficult for DB Kallisto 1.83. The move DB Grandmaster Active should have tried is 61. ... Qc1+ instead of the move that was played 61. ... Qd4+?

But a chance for a draw always exists in these situations if you become aggressive and try to advance your pawns sooner rather than later. ROUND 12 RESULTS

FINAL DIVISION 3 TABLE AFTER 12 ROUNDS

Image

So Amiga 68060 Sargon 3 is Division 3 Champion, 1.1/2 points ahead of DB Kallisto 1.83.

Top dedicated computer is Novag Sapphire II with a slightly above average score. Millennium Chess Genius finished with an average score and Saitek Master Chess finished with a slightly below average score.

Most of the programs were very competitive as you can see with the difference between 7th place and 25th place being only two points.

Here is a different look at the final table which shows the estimated start ELO for each chess program and also the final tournament performance ELO for each chess program. These are USCF ratings in the above table:

Image

This table shows that overall AM68060 Sargon 3 played at Grandmaster strength throughout this tournament. Whereas DB Max Rubin played like a 1600 ELO player.

DIVISION 3 FINAL RANKINGS PREDICTOR AFTER 12 ROUNDS

Image

Well, the predictor is a good or as bad at predicting as humans! :) Other than predicting 1st and last place, it was not any better than our human predictors! :)

But it was fun recording the performance scores for these 180 games, which I think does show that with sufficient games it can be quite accurate for evaluating a program's play strength. For these 180 games it came up with an average rating of 45.99 which when converted comes to an approximate FIDE ELO of 2121 (USCF 2184), which is 9 points less than the average FIDE start ELO of 2130 that I used to begin this tournament.

There are at least 24 programs which would give an over 2000 ELO player a great challenge and at least 12 programs that would give an over 2200 ELO player the same great challenge.

CHAMPION - AMIGA 68060 SARGON 3

Image

There is no doubt that AM68060 dominated Division 3. What remains to be seen is how successful it will be in Division 2. AMCP2150 who had previously won Division 4, finished 12th in Division 3. Perhaps that is an indicator.

PROMOTION TO DIVISION 2:

AM68060 Sargon 3
DB Kallisto 1.83

I am only allowing 2 promotions to Division 2 as I have a lot of interesting programs that I want to include.

And that's all for Division 3...............

This is great stuff! I can't wait to see Division 2. I noticed the Amiga version of Sargon 3 outperformed the Atari version. Have you found that to be the case with most of these chess programs, or does it vary based on the program? Are there a lot of programs available on Amiga, Atari, and DOS-BOX?
