Round 7 Game 1:

AM68060 Sargon 3 - DB MChess 1.06

RESULT: 1-0

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]8/2p1r3/1pk3p1/p6p/Pn1P1PP1/4NK2/1P1R4/8 w - - 0 44[/fen]

This game was drawish until this position. Instead of simply playing 44. ... hxg4, DB MChess 1.06 made a mistake by trying to force the game and played instead 44. ... Rh7? AM68060 Sargon 3 also missed what might have been the best continuation with 45. g5. But the played move 45. gxh5 seemed to also be good enough to win the game in the end.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]8/2p4r/1p1k4/p2n1P1p/P2P1K2/4N3/1P1R4/8 w - - 0 48[/fen]

DB MChess 1.06 just blundered with the move 47. ... Nd5?. AM68060 Sargon 3 now exchanges the knights and the win becomes a formality.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]5K2/8/2Q5/8/8/8/2k5/2q2R2 w - - 0 73[/fen]

Round 7 Game 2:

AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive - DB Kallisto 1.83

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]2r2rk1/2q1p1bp/1np1p1p1/Bp1p4/3PnP2/1Q2P3/PP2B1PP/1NR2RK1 w - - 0 18[/fen]

I don't know what the thought process was, but in a nice position where AM68060 Checkmate Aggressive has the better game, it strangely plays 18. Bxb5? which loses the Bishop for 3 pawns but leaves a position where the pawns don't help at all. The better moves which would have put a lot of pressure on Black were either 18. Nd2 or 18. Bg4

FINAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/6b1/2p3pp/8/1r3P2/6PR/r6P/4R2K w - - 0 36[/fen]

Easy DB Kallisto 1.83 win.

Round 7 Game 3:

Novag Sapphire II - Millennium Chess Genius

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]r3k2r/p2nbp2/8/1p1p2pp/2p1p3/qP1PP1B1/PNP1QPPP/RR4K1 w kq - 0 18[/fen]

Novag Sapphires have a tendency to start the game with 1.b3 and play a Nimzo-Larsen Attack. From my experience, it rarely works for Sapphire against equal or better opponents. The above position is equal should Novag Sapphire II now play 18. f3. This really was the only decent and logical move because white was risking losing its Bishop after the threat of h4. Well strangely Novag Sapphire II played 18. dxe4? and promptly loses the Bishop after 18. ... h4.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/p4p2/2k5/2b1K2N/8/6P1/8/7q w - - 0 65[/fen]

It took Millennium Chess Genius much longer than was necessary to actually win the game after Novag Sapphire II's mistake. All in all a very sloppy win for MCG.

Excellent Tournament!! Thanks

Hi Nick,

It turns out making predictions with these many excellent programs is a risky business...my predictions did not even include Sargon 3... :?

Hi Dave,

I don't think anyone would have included Sargon 3 :) I am at advantage here as I played it a few times before and kind of knew it would be strong as a result of that. It's why could not add myself to any predictions. Would have been like kind of cheating :)

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r2r2k1/pp2nppp/3q1n2/1BpP1b2/2P5/P1B2N2/5PPP/R2Q1RK1 w - - 0 17[/fen]

DB Rex 2.30 has a strong passed pawn on d5 and DB Chessmaster 3000 was unable to stop in this game as a result of several innacuracies played by DB Chessmaster 3000 which mounted up.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]2r5/R5pp/2P2pk1/3B4/8/P7/6PP/4R2K w - - 0 43[/fen]

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]2r3k1/prp5/2p2p1p/3p1bp1/2PP1B2/qP5P/P3QPPK/2R1R3 w - - 0 28[/fen]

Both programs made a few mistakes. However it always seemed likely that DB Sargon 5 would win this game because of its better better placed pieces. In the above position DB Psion Chess 1.01 just played 27. ... g5? which left DB Sargon 5 with a great opportunity to win quickly with the move 28. c5! because 28. ... gxf4? following c5 was not possible due to 29. Qh5! that wins instantly. It is one an example of several missed opportunities to win this game faster by DB Sargon 5.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]2kr3r/ppp2p2/2n4p/4b1p1/2P3b1/PP1q1NP1/3N1PBP/R2QR1K1 w - - 0 17[/fen]

This is another example of a program getting into a mess from the opening that was played. In this position the obvious move for Saitek Master was the 17. Nxe5 and subsequent combination, which would have still left AM68060 Chess Player 2150 with the slightly better game. I am not sure why Saitek Master decided to play 17. Rxe5 because the resulting exchange of pieces ensures that Black wins.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/8/7p/1k3p1P/1P1K3R/2P3r1/8 w - - 0 67[/fen]

I thought that this game might end up a draw, but in the above position AM68060 Chess Simulator made the crucial mistake that lost the game. DB YChess 1.09 is winning by a pawn but the right move here was 67. ... Rg4! with the continuous threat of taking the h-pawn. This should have ensured a draw. However AM68060 Chess Simulator saw it differently and played 67. ... Rf2 which loses.

The above position is drawn, but AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.00 has to play carefully and not let DB Complete Chess System 1.17 reach d6 or c7 with the Queen unchallenged. AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.00 just needed to hold its position and the correct move is 51. .. Qe6+. AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.00 obviously did not understand this and blundered with the move 51. ... https://lichess.org/iWFNkkjd

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/6pp/5p2/R1p5/8/2PK3P/2P3r1/8 w - - 0 38[/fen]

DB Rex 2.30 was down a pawn in the above position when it makes the error that loses the game. DB Rex 2.30 played 38. h4? and probably should have played 38. Rxc5 to have a best chance of drawing and perhaps even some counter play with the resulting 2 passed pawns.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/8/8/2p5/2P1K1p1/2P5/5qk1 w - - 0 64[/fen]

Yet another example of AM68060 Sargon 3 playing the endgame better than the competition in this tournament.

Well this the first time in 8 games that Sargon 3 actually played some blunders. But both where in the endgame while it was well ahead as you can see if you follow this game in Lichess.

Well that's another scalp for AM68060 Sargon 3.

Round 8 Game 2:

DB Kallisto 1.83 - Millennium Chess Genius

RESULT: 1-0

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/JoSo7byL

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]r1b2rk1/pp2qppp/2p2n2/2Pp4/5P2/2PBP3/P2B2PP/1R1Q1RK1 w - - 0 14[/fen]

I was mildly excited for Millennium Chess Genius in this position expecting that it would take the pawn on c5, be a pawn up and with white's backward pawn on e3, things should look rosy for the dedicated computer.

However Millennium Chess Genius played 14. Ne4 which was not as good but still gave MCG a slight advantage over DB Kallisto 1.83.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]r1b2rk1/pp2qppp/2p5/2Pp1P2/1R6/2P1P3/P2B2PP/3Q1RK1 w - - 0 17[/fen]

Well it just took a couple of more moves for the outlook to change from rosy to bleak. In the above position DB Kallisto 1.83 threatens Qh5 followed by Rh4 which is very bad for Black. Millennium Chess Genius had to play 17. ... f6 in this position, considered it but then played 17. ... Qxc5 a couple of moves too late!. Now it was a mistake.

CRITICAL POSITION 3

[fen]r1b3k1/pp3rp1/2p2pQR/3p1P2/8/q1P1P3/P2B2PP/5RK1 w - - 0 22[/fen]

Four moves later in the above position, DB Kallisto 1.83 finds the move 22. Rh8! and Millennium Chess Genius is lost.

I could have resigned here, DB Kallisto 1.83 missed a few opportunities to win quicker but the outcome was inevitable.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/6p1/4kp2/8/p3P3/6P1/1BK4P/8 w - - 0 51[/fen]

That was not a well played game by MCG.

Round 8 Game 3:

DB MChess 1.06 - DB Sargon 5

RESULT: 1-0

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/hDkUDXEo

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]3R4/2p3R1/1kr4P/6P1/p7/8/rp3PK1/8 w - - 0 43[/fen]

I don't know how DB Sargon 5 messed up this won position with pawn on b2 threatening to Queen. DB Sargon 5 just needed to play 43. ... Ka6! or even Kb5 to easily win this game. But it was not to be, DB Sargon 5 played instead 43. ... Rc2? which immediately changed a won game into a drawn game.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]1R6/6RP/k5P1/2p5/p5K1/8/rp5r/8 w - - 0 51[/fen]

The game went from bad to worse for DB Sargon 5. In the above position DB MChess 1.06 just made a mistake by playing 51. Rb8 giving DB Sargon 5 one last chance to draw the game with the 51. ... a3! to be followed by 52. ... Ra1!. But again DB Sargon 5 surprisingly does not play it. Instead it played 51. ... b1Q and promptly loses the game.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]7R/2K3R1/k4rP1/2p5/8/8/p7/8 w - - 0 60[/fen]

Well you can't convince me that Sargon 5 is better than Amiga's Sargon 3 version after witnessing the fall off in this endgame. Admittedly at Pentium 90 emulation Sargon 5 searches 1 ply less than Amiga WinUAE emulator 68060 Sargon 3 on my I7, but that 1 ply difference should not be the cause of these errors. I would bet that Atari 68060-32 MHz Sargon 3 would not make these mistakes and neither would Sargon 3 and Sargon 4 on the MAC emulator. I can't remember if it was on one of these mistakes or both that Sargon 5 pondered, moving too fast perhaps.

Anyway DB MChess 1.06 seems to be riding its luck in this tournament as this is at least the second if not the third time in this Tournament so far that it should have lost handily but its opponents made critical mistakes at the wrong time.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r4rk1/1pp1ppbp/p1q3p1/2PnPb2/3P4/N4N2/PP4PP/R1BQ1RK1 w - - 0 15[/fen]

AM68060 CP2150 probably advanced his central pawns too far too fast in this game. In any case Novag Sapphire II played a good game where it gradually broke down white's position to win.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/2p5/2P5/2bp4/5kNp/3Kp2P/8/5q2 w - - 0 59[/fen]

5 points out of 8 games is not a bad score for Novag Sapphire II.

CRITICAL POSITION

DB Chessmaster 3000 overall had some slight advantages in this game, but it was hard to see any clear cut wins. In the above position 38. Nh4! might have been a better move for white. The played move 38. Bh4+ allowed DB YChess 1.09 to equalize.

FINAL POSITION

AT68060-32 Sargon 3 had some opening problems as you can see from the above position with Rook trapped on h8. But AT68060-32 Sargon 3 defended well and deserved the draw.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/p5bk/2p1p1p1/2P4p/P1K1p2P/2B3P1/1P6/8 w - - 0 35[/fen]

Saitek Master Chess is a pawn ahead but the position looks like a draw because the passed pawn on e4 is easily captured. In this position Saitek Master Chess needed to worry about the move b4 because timing is critical in this position otherwise White will get an unstoppable passed pawn on the Queenside. Anyway as probably expected by now from past results in this Tournament, Saitek Master blunders by playing 35. ... e5 and as a result quickly loses this game.

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/1p2r1k1/1npn3p/p1NpN1p1/P2P1pP1/1PP2P1P/4RK2/8 w - - 0 36[/fen]

AT68060-32 Chess Simulator is under a lot of stress and this position is critical as
the pressure from the two Knights is causing Black a lot of problems. In this position the best moves were either 36. ... Nc8 or 36. ... Na8 to enable the pawn on b7 to advance out of trouble. Anyway, AT68060-32 Chess Simulator was indecisive on what to play next and played a do nothing move with 36. ... Kg8? After this AT68060-32 Psion Chess 2.00 played really well starting with the move 37. h4!

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]4kr2/1q2bp2/4p1p1/4P2p/3B4/1r6/2R3PP/3R1QK1 w - - 0 34[/fen]

AM68060 Checkmate Normal's King has been stuck on e8 throughout this game. There were a lot of mistakes played up to this point with DB Chess Friend missing a few good opportunities. The above position however was the most critical. AM68060 Checkmate Normal needs to really play 34. ... Rg8 to allow the King to get to f8 and maybe g7 and let the rook out of its corner and the chances would have been good for a draw. Strangely AM68060 Checkmate Normal blundered by playing 34. ... Bd8? and was quickly checkmated.

FINAL POSITION

AM68060 Chess Simulator makes a massive mistake in this position by playing 34. ... Bf5? This traps and loses the Bishop after the move 35. Rf4!

FINAL POSITION

[fen]4k2Q/5p2/5Kp1/1p4N1/8/4P2P/5P2/8 w - - 0 54[/fen]

DB Turbo Chess played this game surprisingly well and now has a 50% record with 4 points from 8 games!

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/4rpp1/R6p/8/1P1p4/3P1NP1/1P3PKP/2n5 w - - 0 34[/fen]

Well AM68060 Complete Chess System had chances to win this game. The above position was probably his last one. Moving the pawn forward with 34. b5! or taking the e4 pawn with 34. Nxe4! were the best moves. AM68060 Complete Chess System howver played 34. Ra8+? and after this DB Chessmaster 2000 played the ending well to secure a draw through 3x repetition.

DB Max Rubin as usual is just horrible and in the above position AT68060-32 Checkmate Normal already has a huge advantage. 19. Bc4 or 19. Ne3 are both great moves here. AT68060-32 Checkmate Normal made this game a bit of a misery to operate as it dithered about for ages before finally wining the game.

DIVISION 3 FINAL RANKINGS PREDICTOR AFTER 8 ROUNDS

Image

I added a row at the bottom of the above table that shows the average Lichess evaluations over the 120 games played so far. The average game score is 46.74 points. If you take the FIDE 2200 ELO FIDE Master score of 42.90 and average FIDE Expert score of 50.70 the difference is 7.8 points for the 200 ELO Difference. Therefore 46.74 points amounts to an average FIDE ELO of 2098. Therefore the average game strength evaluated by Lichess for the 120 games played so far at rapid chess is the equivalent of a FIDE Tournament Player rated at ELO 2098.

My average Start ELO at the beginning of the tournament was ELO 2130 therefore so far I estimated too high by 32 ELO points. But there are still 60 games to be played so it could all still change a lot.
