Has anyone seen this bug with the Atlanta?

1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Nbd7 5.e3 Be7 6.Nf3 O-O 7.Rc1 c6 8.Bd3 dxc4 9..Bxc4 Nd5 10.Bxe7 Qxe7 11.Ne4 e5 12.dxe5 Nxe5 13.Nxe5 Qxe5 14.Nc3 Be6 15.Qb3 Qf4 ?????1-0

Atlanta Black
Atlanta is on Lev B2 1 min/move
Tournament book (option H2)

Opponent was Star Diamond, which was in book until move 14 and took about 3 minutes each for moves 14 and 15.

I repeated several times and couldn't believe 15. .. Qf4. Did resets, still the same.
The correct move is D5 F4, but the display and board squares were 100% E5 F4

Thanks for the help...let me know if I left out info.

just tried the position at move 15 with my Atlanta
I can confirm the bug..Atlanta will play 15.Qf4?? from its book
it is a bug in the opening book
if you turn off all books at move 15 Atlanta will play 15.. Nf4
i think someone simply typed in the wrong book move when programming the computer

Bugged Book Regards

Thank you for the confirmation.

Out of curiosity I checked the Atlanta's poor cousin, the Mephisto Master,
to see if it too has the same bug. Seems the Master has a different
tournament book to the Atlanta. In tournament book mode (option h2)
the Master seems to run out of book at black's move 11. but does still
play the same move, ie, 11...e5 after a search. It agrees with the Atlanta for a couple
of moves, at least on the 5sec level, then goes off with other moves.
The Master is fully 7 years younger than the Atlanta. Maybe they saw
the bug themselves, and got around the problem by simply truncating
the book line.

Yep, just checked with the Atlanta...typed in wrong is right!
As a piece of trivia, the Berlin Pro London also has a wrongly typed move
in a Ruy Lopez line. It was many years ago so I can't quite remember
which exact move. Too late to fire the office boy responsible...by now
he's a middle aged man.

Amazing! Now I have to go run the same test as others.

Side note: An interesting contest for human players becomes possible here. After Atlanta loses the Queen, play the game through and see how long it takes to deliver checkmate.

One other Atlanta quirk:

I have seen Atlanta suddenly go into "STOP" mode, when pressing E1 to castle.
Don't have a move sequence saved, but this has happened maybe 3-4 times in about 100 games.
Next time it happens I will post move sequence. (I freaked because I thought the machine totally reset and the game was lost...but pressing the "GO" button just brings Atlanta back to life and continues the game).

Has this been documented previously?

And to respond to the "Queen's odds" comment:
That's about what I need!

Hello Larry,
Your Berlin Pro London is thus a "sullied" machine; the Ruy Lopez, no less. It really doesn't belong in any serious chess computer collectors stable...such as yours. My modest proposal is to get rid of it ASAP.
I will do you a great favor and magnanimously take it off your hands. Please ship it to me directly and relieve yourself of the shame.

Observations:

1. This game was part of a tournament I was running. I decided on a do-over, because the Atlanta algorithm should not be punished for a technician's improper book entry.
The result was astounding:

[Event "Fall2017"]
[Black "Atlanta"]
[Date "Nov 11, 2017"]
[Result "0-1"]
[Round "38 do over"]
[White "SD"]

1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Nbd7 5.e3 Be7 6.Nf3 O-O 7.Rc1 c6 8.Bd3 dxc4 9.Bxc4 Nd5 10.Bxe7 Qxe7 11.Ne4 e5 12.dxe5 Nxe5 13.Nxe5 Qxe5 14.Nc3 Be6 15.Qb3 Nf4 16.Ne2 Nxg2+ 17.Kf1 Bh3 18.e4 Nf4+ 19.Ke1 Qxe4 20.f3 Qe7 21.Rd1 Rad8 22.Rg1 Nxe2 23.Bxe2 Rfe8 SD Resigns 0-1

This was, I believe, the fastest SD resignation... I have ever witnessed. It's almost as if the Atlanta was specially programmed for this specific opening line to quickly annihilate the SD (the curious student may wish to investigate this hypothesis further). If so, that would be "poetic justice": to be pre-programmed for a slam dunk win and an entry typo ends up making it a slam dunk loss!

2. Kudos to Steve B for the "turn off books" suggestion. Initially, I tried to just turn off tournament book...but the Atlanta just went right on with 15. .. Qf4.
Then, I rechecked the post, found it was "turn off ALL books" (square D2, as I recall) and that did it. Atlanta "thinks" for a while and pops out 15. .. Nf4.
SD move 16. Ne2?????? Is GAME OVER....not way later at move 24.

BTW, the 1 min/mv tournament finished as follows:

MCG Pro. 9.5-6.5
SD. 7.5-8.5
Mach4-50 Mhz. 6.5-9.5

Hi 49,

Do you have a breakdown of this tournament available? It would be interesting to see the wins. losses and draws. I am surprised the Mach4-50 didn't have a better result.

Curious...regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,

I'm trying to get it to you, but can't figure it out.

1. The table is a mess when cut and paste from Word.
2. I converted to pdf...but it can't be cut and paste
3. I tried saving as xml...and that was a total mess.

So let me in on the secret: how do you take a Word table and transfer to this
Forum...and still look like a table?

Hi 49,

Thank you for the results. Unfortunately, I do not know how to paste from Word to the forum either. There are some here that will be able to provide guidance. Cool

Still learning...regards,

The entire tournament was surprising, in that: you never knew what you were going to get. Ever single one of these computers calculated one (TASC) or in all other cases: SEVERAL complete dogs (my apologies to dogs). You state that "M4-50 didn't have a better result".
Yet, M4-50 beat Atlanta 4-0!!!!!!!
Here are the 4 games:

Game 33 M4 gets a win, that’s the good news (for M4). The bad is how dreadful the finish was. After Atlanta 31. Re7?? the eval was -17, but M4 missed about 5 knockout moves. In fairness, the position was 1 GHz StockFish territory, not Mach4-50 MHz.

[Event "Fall2017"]

Game 34 Moron 4-50 parlays a +3.2 eval lead at move 37 into a draw by move 52, with such stellar calculations as 39. Kh2-h1?? and 50. Bf3? NOW, Atlanta, with a clear draw, calculates the loser 57. .. Atlanta is 2-9. Poor! And M4-50 has moved up to 4.5-6.5 and will likely finish 3rd!

Game 36 The endgame played by these two imbeciles now enters the “Top Ten Tabletop Turds” of all time. No: Because both these machines are above 2200 Elo (!!!), it is the WORST ENDGAME ATROCITY....EVER. AT move 51, M4-50 has Mate in 12 and defecates 51. h3?????????????? (ostensibly, to save the “h” pawn) AND DRAWS!!!!!!!!! And then, ATLANTA, with an absolutely, positively, 100% draw calculates 57. .. a5??????????? GAME OVER. Mind-boggling; 2200+ Elo chess computers. M4-50 crushes Atlanta in the head to head 4-0. An atrocious Atlanta “achievement”. M4-50 has a good chance to finish .500: now 5.5-6.5.
