Affordable Dedicated Chess Tournament

Post by TracySMiller »

I've improved my collection, and I thought I'd try again to have a decent tournament. Same as last time, except this time I have 16 entrants, so I won't have to give any first round byes. I've started a Google Docs if you're interested in following the results. That link is:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

The participants are:

1 Novag Citrine
2 RS Champion 2250XL
3 RS Master 2200X
4 Mephisto Advanced Travel Chess
5 RS Mega 2050X
6 Excalibur Ivan
7 Excalibur Igor
8 Excalibur Grandmaster
9 Fidelity Excellence
10 RS ChessMaster
11 RS 2150L
12 RS Talking Chess 1900L
13 RS 1850
14 Excalibur King Arthur Deluxe
15 Excalibur Chess Station
16 RS 1650 Fast Response

I ranked the chess computers by WikiElo, if available. There were a few that I had to make an educated guess. First round is Best of 12, Quarterfinals are Best of 16, Semifinals are Best of 20, and the Final is Best of 24. One minute/move (average time), pondering on when available to both computers.

First up is the mighty Novag Citrine vs. the Radio Shack 1650 Fast Response (the first chess computer I ever owned, back in the 80's).

I'm calling this the Affordable Dedicated Chess Tournament because I can't afford those nice Mephisto boards or the Revelation units (I can dream, though!).

The RS 1650 Fast Response plays a decent first half of the game, and until a risky decision on move 19, is about even. After the move, black gets down in material but MAY have enough checks to draw the game with precise play. But this is the RS 1650, so precision is not readily available. Novag Citrine leads the match 2-0.

The Radio Shack 1650 Fast Response initiates a flurry of exchanges on move 17 that don't turn out well for white. Novag Citrine does a nice job of converting the win. Novag Citrine leads the match 3-0.

You have a nice collection. Will look forward to seeing how your tournament ends. My prediction is that the top 5 on your list should be competitive playing each other. Once you get below them, the rest will find it harder against the top 5.

Best regards

Thanks, Spacious_Mind. I must say your website has been an amazing resource for me. You surely have more chess computers than anyone on the planet! In addition to the ones I have in my tournament, I have an Excalibur LCD Express, but it seemed to me to really be the same computer as the Excalibur Chess Station. I used to have a Radio Shack 1650 Portable peg unit, but it died on me. I also recently bought a Radio Shack 1750L on eBay, but on receipt most of the squares didn't work, so I was bummed about that.

I also lost a recent auction of the Millenium ChessGenius Pro because I didn't do my research and set my max bet too low. I went $45 and lost to a guy who won with a $50 bid.

I'm loving the looks of that Millenium ChessGenius Exclusive. It's just so expensive!

Novag Citrine takes a 4-0 lead

Post by TracySMiller »

The RS 1650 Fast Response made a terrible blunder (8...Nxd4??) that it should have not made at 1 min/move. I think even a 900 player would not have made this horrible a move! The mighty Citrine leads 4-0.

The powerful #1 seed Novag Citrine concludes the match in dominating fashion, winning 7-0. In this last game, the RS 1650 Fast Response made the atrocious 23. Bf5??, and the Citrine powered on for the win.

Excalibur King Arthur Deluxe vs RS Master 2200X - Game One

Post by TracySMiller »

I'm skipping over the #2 vs #15 battle right now until my RS Champion 2250XL arrives. In the meantime, I'll match up the #3 seed RS Master 2200X with the #14 seed Excalibur King Arthur Deluxe.

In this first game, we get the seldom played Budapest Defense, and a fun tactical game arises, and it's clear that the RS Master 2200X is the better tactician. The RS Master 2200X takes a 1-0 lead.

RS Master 2200X leads the match 2-0

Post by TracySMiller »

In game two, we see the Closed Sicilian defense. Again the RS Master 2200X is all over the Excalibur King Arthur Deluxe, ending the game with a pretty Queen supported by Knight back-rank mate. RS Master 2200X leads the match 2-0.

RS Master 2200X leads the match 3-0

Post by TracySMiller »

Game three starts with another Sicilian, but this time the Smith Morra variation. The King Arthur hangs in there longer this time, but makes a fatal decision of moving its King towards the enemy's wall of advancing pawns. The RS Master 2200X makes him pay for this mistake, and takes a 3-0 lead in the match. This game reminded me of some of the Kasparov vs Deep Blue games in 1997, with all the piece maneuvering in a closed position.

RS Master 2200X leads the match 3.5-0.5

Post by TracySMiller »

Game four was one of the strangest games I've seen between computers, as very early on in a Queen's Gambit Accepted, both computers couldn't see past a couple of piece maneuvers, and fell into a 3-fold repetition draw. It was frustrating, because Stockfish clearly saw a white advantage if he would only start advancing his Kingside pawns instead of shuffling his Queen to and fro. The RS Master 2200X leads 3.5-0.5.

RS Master 2200X leads 4.5-0.5.

Post by TracySMiller »

The RS Master 2200X resumes its winning ways in an Old Benoni Defense, featuring an early, but temporary, Knight sacrifice. The King Arthur tries to harass the enemy Queen, but in doing so lets Black get a passed pawn on the A file which eventually determines the game. The Radio Shack Master 2200X leads the match 4.5-0.5.
