Some test positions of games just played.

Post by spacious_mind »

I wonder how many dedicated chess computers would find the correct winning sequence of moves in these positions.

Test Position 1

[fen]8/R7/8/5p2/8/4k2P/5nK1/8 w - - 0 60[/fen]

Correct moves are 60. Ra3+ Nd3 61. h4! Ke2 (or other King moves like Ke4) 62. Rxd3 Kxd3 63. Kf3!

So in the above test dedicated computer has to get both 60. Ra3+ right and 63. Kf3! to get full point! If only one or the other then 1/2 point!

Test Position 2

Another easy one, maybe? :) How many dedicated computers would play the correct best move 57. Rg3! in this position:

[fen]8/8/8/2n2p2/5k2/R6P/7K/8 w - - 0 57[/fen]

Test Position 3

How many dedicated computers would play 42. Rb8! or b6! in this position below:

[fen]6R1/3b1pp1/5k1p/PP1n4/8/7P/5PP1/6K1 w - - 0 42[/fen]

Test Position 4

Which dedicated computers would play 27. Qb8! in this position:

[fen]3Rnk1r/2Q1qppp/4b3/2p5/8/P7/1P3PPP/4R1K1 w - - 0 27[/fen]

Test Position 5

Lastly a little harder one, which dedicated computers would choose to play 34. ... Bf1! in this position:

[fen]7k/4R2p/1p2p3/p3P1p1/4p3/3bP1PN/PP1B2KP/3r4 w - - 0 34[/fen]

I wonder which dedicated chess computers would get 5 out of 5 right?

Best regards
Nick

Adding 3 more Test positions for dedicated chess computers to try.

Test Position 6

[fen]5b2/1p3P1p/5Kp1/1P6/7P/8/3k2P1/8 w - - 0 46[/fen]

In the above position Millennium Chess Genius should have won the game after either 46. ... Kc3! or 46. ... Kd3! But missed the moves and played 46. ... Ke2?

Which dedicated computers can do better in the above position and play either Kc3 or Kd3! MCG played at 30 seconds per move setting.

Test Position 7

[fen]5b2/1p1K1P1p/6p1/1P6/7P/8/5kP1/8 w - - 0 48[/fen]

Same game a couple of moves later. There is only one good move left in this position which is 48. ... b6! which retains a slight advantage and should be good for at least a draw. Millennium Chess Genius at 30 seconds played 48. ... Kxg2? and lost.

So which dedicated chess computers play 48. ... b6! ?

Test Position 8

This one I think should be an easy one for most dedicated chess computers:

[fen]5rk1/p1p2ppp/1q3n2/2P5/3p2b1/1P2P1P1/P2P3P/RNQ1KR2 w Q - 0 19[/fen]

Atari 68060-32 MHz Psion Chess 2.01 plays 19. ... Qb5? and loses the game. Yet Atari 68060-32 MHz Psion Chess 2.01 could have won the game had it played 19. ... Qc6!

So which dedicated chess computers would have played 19. ... Qc6!

Here are two more positions to make it a total of 10 positions.

Test Position 9

[fen]5k2/1p3pp1/p2Np2p/P2b4/3PP1PP/6K1/5P2/8 b - - 0 43[/fen]

Black's Bishop on d5 is being attacked by the pawn. Naturally the first instinct is to move the Bishop away for example to c6. There is however only one good move which is for Black's King to move to e7!

Test Position 10

[fen]8/4k3/2K2p2/1P5p/5NbP/8/8/8 w - - 0 54[/fen]

White is threatening to win the game by advancing the pawn on b5. But how do you stop the advance and survive with a draw?

Well the correct move is Bd7+ and take the pawn on b5. But I just wonder how many old programs would actually find this move?

I just thought I would give it a quick go with Amiga 68060 Sargon 3:

Position 1 - 1. Ra3 = 1 Point
Position 2 - 1. h4 = 0
Position 3 - 1. Rb8 = 1
Position 4 - 1. Qb8 = 1
Position 5 - 1. ... Bf1+ = 1
Position 6 - 1. ... Kd3 = 1
Position 7 - 1. ... Kxg2 = 0
Position 8 - 1. ... Qb5 = 0
Position 9 - 1. ... Bc6 = 0
Position 10 - 1. ... Kd8 = 0

Total Score = 5 out of 10

Only 5 right at 30 seconds per move.

Out of curiosity I wanted to see if I can present several FEN Positions next to each other in a forum post. It is a bit fiddly but it works. At a higher resolution I can actually get 3 next to each other but I think that would spoil it for people who view with lower screen resolutions. But I think the below works for most people.

Anyway here are the 10 Tests again set up more presentably (I think?)

**************TEST 1 **************** _________ ************TEST 2 ***********

TOTAL POINTS = 69 OUT OF 100

SUMMARY FOR AM68060 SARGON 3
5s = 4 points
15s = 5 points
30s = 5 points
1M = 6 points
2M = 8 points
3M = 8 points
6M = 8 points
10M = 8 points
20M = 8 points
30M = 9 points

Total Points = 69 points x 35 = 2415 Test ELO.

By adding the 10 scores together and using a multiplication factor of 35 Amiga Sargon 3 receives a Test ELO score of 2415.

This is the score to beat!.

Allowed to participate are Dedicated Chess Computers and DOS with old computers or their respective emulators!

No high speed engines allowed!! :)

The simplest and quickest way to do the test is:

1) Play all the time settings up to 3 minutes using your computer levels.
2) Do 6 minutes for any new correct solution received at time controls 2 and 3 minutes to validate and ensure the move sticks and does not get changed.
3) Over 6 minutes use Infinite setting and stopwatch and write down move at respective control times.

Doing it this way is faster as you will probably not have to play 30 minutes for every single position.

I just tried the same test with Rebel 6:

SUMMARY FOR DB REBEL 6 (69,300 CPU cycles = @ Pentium 90)
5s = 5 points
15s = 5 points
30s = 8 points
1M = 8 points
2M = 8 points
3M = 8 points
6M = 8 points
10M = 8 points
20M = 8 points
30M = 8 points

Total Points = 74 points x 35 = 2590 Test ELO.

RANK
1. DB-P90 Rebel 6= 2590 Test ELO
2. AM68060 Sargon 3 = 2425

Here's my results of the first five tests on my modest Powerbrain Orion (Rated 1400):

Test 1: Ra5 - 0 points
TEst 2: a3 - 0 points
Test 3: b6 - 1 point
Test 4: Qb8 - 1 point
Test 5 Rd2 - 0 points

So, I guess the score is not fantastic. I gave it three attempts at Test 5, but it never got past its first idea, which is what you see.

Edit: I just read your test procedure and will have to do it again as my testing was pretty half-pie. Interesting nonetheless!
