I had time to play one game this afternoon. And I am really pleased that I did. This is a lesson on how to confuse and play around with your opponent!

Round 1 Game 1:

DB Fritz 2 - AM68060 Sargon 3

RESULT: 0-1

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/AEUVbJvv

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]2b1k2r/1p1pppbp/5n2/rp3p2/1nP5/6P1/P3PPBP/R2QK2R w KQk - 0 14[/fen]

AM68060 Sargon 3 dubiously decided to give up its Queen for a Bishop and two Knights. But it seemed to work well as DB Fritz 2 had no idea on how to proceed after that. In the above position DB Fritz 2 plays 14. Qb3 which was not the best continuation. Better was 14. Qd2.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/1p1bpp2/1P3b2/2p3p1/5n1K/4pr1P/8/7Q w - - 0 43[/fen]

AM68060 continues with its winning ways and DB Fritz 2 gets checkmated in 42 moves.

A TEST POSITION

[fen]r1b1k2r/1p1pppbp/2n2np1/qp3N2/2P5/6P1/PP1BPPBP/R2QK2R w KQkq - 0 11[/fen]

I seriously doubt that there are many programs around that would have the temerity to play 11. ... gxf5!? and sacrifice their Queen for 3 minor pieces? ... and then win the game so easily! Amazing really....

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

DB Fritz 2, 30S. (2250)
7 Inaccuracies
5 Mistakes
1 Blunders
41 Average centipawn loss

AM68060 Sargon 3, 30S. (2467)
0 Inaccuracies
2 Mistakes
0 Blunders
16 Average centipawn loss

Move over Alpha Zero.... come out and play against Sargon 3 on a Pentium 90! :P

Wow, this is bringing back so many memories! The very first computer I bought was in 1995, an old Packard Bell running Windows 95. The first software I bought for it was Chessmaster 4000 Turbo. I had so much fun playing chess on the computer in those days. I would download all the programs for windows I could find. Gnu Chess, Arasan, K-Chess, and all these great old programs. I even bought Kasparov's Gambit, and I loved it because it was so different and quirky.

There used to be a game that came with Windows called Ziggurat. I don't know if it can be found anymore. And there was this TINY little windows chess program called Waxman.

One of my absolute favorite's though, was PowerChess. There was just something wonderful about having that PowerChess Queen analyze your game move-by-move with that sexy voice.

I really enjoy reading your summaries, however I thought you might like to know this:

The Australian flag is upside down, and the New Zealand flag is around the wrong way. It's not a great look.

Thanks for spotting it. I may have inadvertently flipped the images when I sized them down to that small size. Anyway it is corrected now. Not intended to fire up the folks from down under :)

Hi Tracy,

Good choices, not too sure about a couple of them though top or bottom, but its hard to know without seeing some actual games first :)

Hi, these Tournaments are brilliant to follow. More interesting than one held between the stockfish's, Houdini 's etc when can't understand most of it and too many draws.
Your work is much appreciated.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]1rbqkb1r/3n1ppp/1p2p3/2Pp4/QP6/5N2/P3PPPP/RN2KB1R w KQk - 0 10[/fen]

DB Kasparov Gambit was out of book too early which decided the game before it really ever started. In this position out of book DB Kasparov Gambit plays 10. Nc3? to give DB WChess 1.05 a good advantage and an easy win. However Gambit's position was already bad so there was nothing to play that was much better.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/4Qp2/4p3/3p2pp/4P2P/5P1K/5q2/5b2 w - - 0 41[/fen]

And another tournament favorite starts off with a win.

DB M-Chess Pro 3.12 is ahead by a pawn but nut it seems that DB M-Chess 1.71 would be able to hold out for a draw when in this position DB M-Chess 1.71 plays 49. ... Kf4? which is a mistake. Best move here was 49. ... Kf6.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/8/2N2Kp1/1P4Pk/4b3/8/8 w - - 0 59[/fen]

And another picked favorite wins!

DB Kallisto 1.83 is cramped but his game still playable. DB Kallisto 1.83 however makes a mistake here with the move 25. ... Rbb8 which gives DB Zarkov 2.61 a good avantage and the win. DB Kallisto 1.83 should have played 25. ... Nd7 and look towards getting rid of that well placed Knight on e5.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r5rk/2R1R1pp/3p2p1/1p1q4/3P4/5P1P/1P1Q2PK/8 w - - 0 41[/fen]

DB Chess System Tal has the better position in this endgame because of the two Rooks on the 7th rank. With good play a draw was still very probable for DB Nimzo Guernica. However DB Nimzo Guernica starts playing inacurately and ends up losing. In the above position DB Nimzo Guernica plays 41. ... Ra4?! Better was 41. ... Rae8.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]5k1Q/2R4p/3P2pq/1p6/8/5P1P/8/7K w - - 0 68[/fen]

DB Socrates 3.0 positionally stands better. MAC Sargon 4 should have played 37. ... Bxf4 and make it a Rook and Pawn ending with good drawing chances. MAC Sargon 4 made a mistake playing 37. ... Kh7? which ends up losing.
