In this battle of the giants, W3X Chessmaster 4000 had the best opportunity for a win in this position with the move 33. Nexf5! Unfortunately W3X Chessmaster 4000 did not see it and played 33. Nec2 instead.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]7Q/4kp2/3N2p1/1K2P3/3q1PP1/8/p7/8 w - - 0 72[/fen]

Well the game ended in a draw. Both programs played a solid game.

DB Rebel 6 Active has a good position from its opening book. It is in this position that the game was decided with DB Chess Genius 2 playing 9. ... a5?! Better would have been 9. ... Nbd7. After this DB Chess Genius 2 played hard for 82 moves but could never get out of trouble.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]4R3/1P1P1p2/5kp1/4p3/4P3/pPKnb3/P4r2/8 w - - 0 86[/fen]

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/4P1k1/1R4pp/1p2r3/7P/6K1/8 w - - 0 60[/fen]

DB Chess Genius 1 had the advantage throughout this game. In this position however DB Chess Genius 1 misses a last chance for a win by not playing 60. ... Kf6! The move 60. ... g4 that was played only draws.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/4r3/8/6k1/1R4p1/8/6K1/8 w - - 0 64[/fen]

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/7k/4KB2/r3NP2/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 77[/fen]

DB Hiarcs 1.0 got away with murder in this game as DB Chess System Tal must have had a thousand opportunities to win but missed on them all. The above position albeit a little complicated was one of the last opportunities. Correct sequence of White moves that were continuously missed by DB Chess System Tal were 77. Ke7! followed by 78. Nd7 and 79. Bd5... this would have allowed the safe advance of the pawn and promotion. Who knows perhaps DB Chess System Tal does not know how to checkmate with Bishop and Knight resulting in this completely incompetent endgame.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/5K1k/5B2/r3NP2/8/8/8/8 w - - 0 85[/fen]

Drawn by 3x repetition of position.

DB Psion Chess 2.13 just played 15. Rfe1 which was a mistake as it sets up 15. ... fxe4! 16. dxe4 16. ... Rxf3! sacrificing the Rook for the Knight and Queen winning the Pawn on h3. DB WChess 1.05 won quite easily after this.

FINAL POSITION

DB Fritz 1 is ahead by a pawn but DB Kallisto 1.83 has a lot of pressure on white's position. There is only one good move in this position which is 23. Na3! DB Fritz 1 missed it and played 23. Qf1? and loses.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/5p2/3P4/Rb2B1p1/p7/5PK1/2r3P1/8 w - - 0 38[/fen]

DB Zarkov 2.61 is down a pawn against DB Socrates 3.0 but with opposite colored Bishops DB Zarkov 2.61 still has a chance for a draw. In this position however DB Zarkov 2.61 makes the game losing mistake playing 38. ... Bf1? There was no need for this move as all it does is encourage DB Socrates 3.0's King to advance forward. 38. ... Bc6 was the best move to play in this position.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]3R4/5k2/8/4pKp1/p7/5P2/8/8 w - - 0 46[/fen]

Round 3 Game 8:

DB Nimzo Guernica - MAC Sigma Chess 4.02

RESULT: 1/2-1/2

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]rq4k1/1b1n1ppp/pp3n2/8/3P4/1QN1PNb1/PP2B2P/2R1R1K1 w - - 0 22[/fen]

For a short while it looked like MAC Sigma Chess 4.02 was going to totally destroy DB Nimzo Guernica. In the above position 22. ... Bxh2+ or 22. ... Ng4 were both killer moves. Strangely after creating this great position MAC Sigma Chess 4.02 misses these two obvious moves and instead takes the Rook with 22. ... Bxe1?

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]1n3rk1/R3Q1pp/p7/1p1bNp2/3P3P/2N1P3/PP6/2K4q w - - 0 45[/fen]

In this position DB Nimzo Guernica finally gets a good opportunity to win this game. Since DB Nimzo Guernica is threatening checkmate , all MAC Sigma Chess 4.02 has to hope for is a draw through repetition. Here DB Nimzo Guernica should have tried 45. Nd1 which stops the repetitive checks. Follow ths with advancing the pawn on h4 to h6 and white likely wins! Anyway DB Nimzo Guernica did not see any of that and settled for draw.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]1n3rk1/R3Q1pp/p7/1p1bNp2/3P3P/2N1P3/PP4q1/3K4 w - - 0 50[/fen]

Round 3 Game 9:

DB Fritz 2 - MAC Gnu Chess 4.0

https://lichess.org/0M2wOBN0

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]2q5/7p/5Qpk/8/4P3/6PP/5P1K/8 w - - 0 49[/fen]

DB Fritz 2 has given me the non pleasure of playing the most torturous and frustrating game that I have played in in 10 years. The last time I experienced this was playing a few games with some 1000 ELO programs in a U1400 tournament 10 years ago. This game was horrible.

In the above postion DB Fritz 2 who had already missed countless opportunities to win easily, reaches the above endgame with Queen of f6 placed greatly to not only trap the Black's King but also advance the pawn on e4 for a quick win.

Well Ripley, believe it or not! The game ends in a draw after 10 DB Fritz 2 blunders according Lichess. Which had to be a record only to be beaten by the opponent MAC Gnu Chess 4.0 who made 14 Blunders!

This really confirms the theory that Morsch programs were clueless at endgames!! :)

FINAL POSITION

W3X K-Chess 2.0 had a great position here with 23. Qh5! looking very strong. Strangely however W3X K-Chess 2.0 plays 23. c4? and the opportunity is gone. After this DB M-Chess 1.71 gets going and ends up winning easily.

Round 3 Game 12:

Millennium Chess Genius Pro - Mephisto Atlanta

RESULT: 0-1

https://lichess.org/I3Ll4qk2

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]8/5n2/p4P2/2k2K2/p7/8/2N5/8 w - - 0 77[/fen]

Here I was complaining about Morsch earlier when in what seems to be a drawn end game, Lang's Millennium Chess Genius Pro just blundered and played 77. Nc2? Now all Mephisto Atlanta has to do is play 77. ... Kc4! and the game is won! But no such luck :( Mephisto Atlanta plays 77. ... Kd6? and I thought to myself here we go again!

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]8/8/p2k1PK1/4n3/p7/8/2N5/8 w - - 0 79[/fen]

Well anyway a couple of moves later Millennium Chess Genius Pro seems to think that it can force the white pawn on f6 to success and completely ignores Black's two pawn. Thinking that perhaps the Knight on c2 is sufficient to stop them.

Anyway instead of retreating the King with the move 79. Kf5! that should still draw decides instead to play 79. Kg7? and lose the game.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/8/2K5/p7/1k6/8/8 w - - 0 88[/fen]

Well this does make you wonder who was worse in endgames Morsch or Lang? :)

The game was well played by both until the endgame

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

MAC Sargon 4 also gets its first win of this tournament beating W3X Arasan 2.0. In this position MAC Sargon 4 leads by a pawn but everything is still pretty even. W3X Arasan 2.0 played 24. ... Kb6? which really was not the best as it encourages the advancement of the passed a and b pawns which was decisive.

DIVISION 2 FINAL RANKINGS PREDICTOR AFTER 3 ROUNDS

Image

The average performance dropped to ELO 2094 which is lower than the average at the end of the Division 3 tournament. This is primarily due to that Fritz 2 game against MAC Gnu Chess where both scored really badly.

Very cool games. My top five are in places 1, 3, 4, 6, and 18th. Not too shabby. Long way to go, though.

Hi Nick

Pity ChessGenius 3 wasn't playing.

I only say this because when I tested ChessGenius 1, ChessGenius 2 & ChessGenius 3 with your positional rating test, CG1 got your highest rating followed by CG2. I don't know why I didn't send you the results but they where done on my previous PC which went belly up so maybe that is why?

Hi Bryan,

I have not forgotten about Chess Genius 3. Planning to include it later in Division 1.

So far CG1 has impressed me more than CG2 in this tournament.

Hi Nick, I wonder why Mirage-2 wasnt included in any division (but Siberian took a part in it). Great tourney project anyway, thanks!

Hi Ivan,

Yes, I thought about Mirage, but the version I have I could never get working with DOSBox. DOSBox closes after the Mirage start screen starts. So in the end I gave up about including it in the tournament.

Round 4 Game 1:

AM68060 Sargon 3 - DB Rebel 6 Active

RESULT: 1/2-1/2

CLICK BELOW TO REPLAY GAME

https://lichess.org/y5lNAPqq

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/6k1/1R6/8/1P1P3p/3K4/6r1/8 w - - 0 39[/fen]

Wow in this top of the table battle no one gave an inch to the opponent playing a Vienna Gambit. In the above position AM68060 Sargon 3 risked it all taking black's last queenside pawns to go a pawn up in the end game. DB Rebel 6 Active however has that strong passed pawn on h4 and in the end AM68060 Sargon 3 had to give up the Rook to stop it. However since it required both black's Rook and King to force the Queen promotion, there was nothing that DB Rebel 6 Active could do other than sactifice its own Rook in the end to stop the two advancing white pawns and accept a draw.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/3K4/8/8/8/5k2/8/8 w - - 0 63[/fen]

This was a fight to the bitter end!

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]2rr4/p3k2p/2np2p1/1p2p2P/5P2/2P3P1/PPKR1B2/4R3 w - - 0 31[/fen]

DB Chess Genius 1 had a slight edge throughout in this Pirc Defense, Austrian Attack game. In the above position W3X Chessmaster 4000 makes that one critical mistake by taking the white pawn on h5 with 31. ... gxh5? This allowed DB Chess Genius 1 to break through with both Rooks on the Kingside and there was nothing that W3X Chessmaster 4000 could do to stop it. Better moves in the above position would have been either 31. ... a6 or 31. ... Ke6.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]2QR4/1K6/8/1P6/4k3/8/8/1r6 w - - 0 74[/fen]

The strength of DB Chess Genius 1 often gets ignored as a result of the later CG2 and CG3 versions. However CG1 is well capable of beating anyone as shown in this tournament so far.

Round 4 Game 3:

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]4r2k/1B4p1/p6p/2P5/1PP5/P4QP1/2K4P/4q3 w - - 0 35[/fen]

In the early part of the game DB Chess Genius 2 had the advantage but let it slip away. The above position is critical, DB Chess Genius 2 has a Bishop and 3 pawns for a Rook but DB M-Chess Pro 3.12 has a strong attack against the King. There is only one move that is good for white which is 35. Qh1! Everything else loses. Unfortunately DB Chess Genius 2 misses this move and plays 35. Kd3? and loses the game.

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/6P1/8/PPPPPP1P/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1[/fen]

DB WChess 1.05 surprisingly started the game with 1. g4? playing a Grob Gambit. This of course gave DB Socrates 3.0 an immediate pawn advantage and DB Socrates 3.0 is too good to try this against.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]r3kb2/pp3pp1/2p5/2n1p1P1/4B3/2NPBP2/PP4b1/2K4R w q - 0 21[/fen]

This position after 20 moves is about as close as what DB WChess 1.05 got with salvaging a draw. 21. Rh8! might have been the best chance here. DB WChess 1.05 played 21. Rg1 which was more passive and not quite as good.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/1q6/1P6/2K5/8/4k3/8/8 w - - 0 90[/fen]

Well DB WChess 1.05 lasted 90 moves but the outcome was inevitable after the first move. It does make me wonder if I was being fair allowing DB WChess 1.05 to play 1. g4? but then again the first rule of Computer tournament play is NO HUMAN INTERFERENCE IN GAMES BEING PLAYED! :)

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

DB WChess 1.05, 30S. (2400)
9 Inaccuracies

0 Blunders
28 Average centipawn loss

DB Socrates 3.0, 30S. (2300)
4 Inaccuracies
1 Mistakes
0 Blunders
16 Average centipawn loss

Well, DB WChess 1.05 will just have to work harder in the rest of its games to make up for this unfotunate loss of a point.

Anyway who is to say that DB Socrates 3.0 who is also a strong program might not have won anyway regardless of what opening was played :)

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]1b4B1/r7/PpP2k2/1P6/3rppR1/2R5/2K5/8 w - - 0 61[/fen]

DB Kasparov Gambit had the initiative throughout this game. However by the time the above position was reached DB Kallisto 1.83 had worked its way back into the game with some good chances for at least a draw. But, unfortunately in this position is also where DB Kallisto 1.83 makes that crucial mistake that loses the game. 61. ... Re7! is the correct move which prepares the advancement of the pawn on e4. DB Kallisto 1.83 played 61. ... Rb4. After 61. ... Rb4 DB Kasparov Gambit should have played 62. Rh3! immediately for a quick win but missed it and played instead 62. Rb3. DB Kallisto 1.83 however helped DB Kasparov Gambit out by exchanging the the Rooks with the move 62. ... Rxb3... after which everything became a lot easier for DB Kasparov Gambit to win this game.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/6p1/4qp2/1p1p4/1prP2P1/4P3/1R2KPQ1/8 w - - 0 39[/fen]

This position is critical as DB M-Chess 1.71 is a pawn up and has good initiative and position of its pieces. DB Hiarcs 1.0 must have been worried about the black move Rxd4 and therefore moves its King away from the pin with 39. Kd2?!. However since DB Hiarcs 1.0 position was so defensive and cramped, this move was not the best to have a chance at a draw. Best here was 39. g5! followed by 40. Ra2! as these two moves would have allowed DB Hiarcs 1.0 repetitive checks by threatening to move its Rook to a8! with Queen assistance as a result of this 39. ... g5! freeing up move. Anyway there was not much that DB Hiarcs 1.0 could do to stop DB M-Chess 1.71 from wnning this game after 39. Kd2?!

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]r1b1kb1r/ppp2ppp/2n2n2/3p4/2B5/4BN2/PPP2PPP/RN3RK1 w kq - 0 10[/fen]

Just like DB WChess 1.05 in the earlier posted game, Mephisto Atlanta plays a dubious Urusov Gambit opening with almost zero compensation for the pawn sacrifice. This is the position shortly after Mephisto Atlanta and DB Chess System Tal were out of their opening book. No compensation, nothing doing for Mephisto Atlanta.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]3Krk2/q4p1p/5p2/8/6PP/4N3/5P2/8 w - - 0 56[/fen]

No surprsingly, DB Chess System Tal wins comfortably.

MAC Sigma Chess 4.02 is up a Bishop for two pawns but MAC Gnu Chess 4.0 still had a small chance for something in this position with the move 46. Nd5! But anwyay MAC Gnu Chess 4.0 played 46. Qa1 and that lost quickly.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6r1/5p2/N1kbbp1p/p6r/N1p5/1PR3P1/P4P1P/2R3K1 w - - 0 40[/fen]

DB Nimzo Guernica who had been ahead for most of this game had in the last few moves allowed the advantage to slip away. In this position DB Nimzo Guernica now blunders with the move 40. bxc4? and ends up losing easily. The alternative was to give up the Rook for the Bishop with a slight chance for survival but obviously DB Nimzo Guernica did not like giving up the Rook.

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/5p2/3k4/4bPP1/2K5/1R6/1p6/8 w - - 0 51[/fen]

DB Gandalf 2.1 who had previously missed some good opportunities to win this game as a result of some DB Fritz 2 mistakes gets a last chance for a win in this endgame position. Both 51. Rb6+ and 51. Kd3! win but 51. Kd3! is best because after 52. Kc2! it frees up the Rook to assist the two white pawns. Anyway DB Gandalf 2.1 missed several opportunites and DB Fritz 2 gets a lucky draw.

[fen]3r3r/Bpkb1ppp/1N1q1n2/4p3/1pP3Pb/3P1P2/P3Q1BP/2KR3R w - - 0 19[/fen]

MAC MacChess 2.5 misses its best opportunity in this position with the move 19. d4! which was interesting and oh so full of traps! Anyway MAC MacChess 2.5 missed it and played 19. Nxd7 which immediately gave MAC Sargon 4 a great advantage.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]2kr3r/1p3ppp/4q3/2n1B3/1pPR2Pb/4QP2/P5BP/2K4R b - - 0 25[/fen]

This position is great too! MAC Sargon 4 now has a big advantage but misses a nice combination with the moves 25. ... Rxd4! 26. Qxd4 Qxe5 27. Qxe5 Nd3+! or the variation 25. ... Rxd4! 26. Bxd4 Bg5! 27. Qxg5 Qxc4+ 28. Kd1 Qxd4+ which would have won easily. Well MAC Sargon 4 played 25. ... Nd3+ which is not so good and in the end has to accept a draw through 3x repetition of position.

FINAL POSITION
