Round 5 Game 1:

DB Rebel 6 Active - DB Chess Genius 1

RESULT: 1-0

CRITICAL POSITION 1

[fen]r2q1rk1/pp3pp1/2n1pn1p/2bp3b/2P3PN/1PN4P/P2BPPB1/R2Q1RK1 w - - 0 14[/fen]

In this top of the table game, DB Rebel 6 Active made the first mistake playing 14. g4? because this set up a nice combination that would likely have won the game for DB Chess Genius 1 starting from the above position with the move 14. Nxg4!. For example a white reply to this move with 15. hxg4 is followed with 15. ... Qxh4 with mate threats.

DB Chess Genius 1 missed all this and played 14. ... Ne4 which keeps the game equal.

CRITICAL POSITION 2

[fen]r2q1rk1/pp3pp1/2n1p2p/2b4b/2P1p1PN/1P2B2P/P3PPB1/R2Q1RK1 w - - 0 16[/fen]

Now just a couple of moves later DB Chess Genius 1 makes a mistake that eventually results in a loss. In this position 16. ... Qxh4! was the right move to keep things even. DB Chess Genius 1 played 16. ... Be7? which allows DB Rebel 6 Active to win a pawn.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]3k3Q/8/4PK2/8/5p1P/8/5P2/8 w - - 0 65[/fen]

GAME QUALITY SUMMARY

DB Rebel 6 Active, 30S. (2400)

Also, what does the FM, CM, etc before the name of the chess programs on your list indicate? And what program are you using to do the round robin pairings?
Sorry I forgot to answer some of your questions.

I use Vega Tournament Manager which personally I found by far the best program to manage Swiss Tournaments.

There are several Swiss Tournament Manager Programs out there but having tried most of them I find Vega to be easily the best by a long distance that satisfies my needs.

FM etc are chess titles that FIDE and USCF use. Since my evaluations compare to humans I thought it would fun to also compare to titles.

Therefore you have:

IM = International Master = 2400 ELO and above
FM = FIDE Master = 2300 ELO and above
CM = Candidate Master = 2200 and above
LM = Life Master = 2100 and above
CN = Country National = Country title = 2000 and above

Below 2000 you would have your Expert and Class titles.

As I said its a mix between federation titles plus one I made up (the last one CN).

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]1k6/6pp/8/1Bp1q1p1/P3n2r/7P/4Q1P1/5RK1 w - - 0 47[/fen]

For a long time it seemed that DB Kasparov Gambit was going to get something out of this game. In this position however DB Kasparov Gambit began making the first of several errors which caused it to lose the game. Best move in this position was 47. ... Qd4+ which would have stopped DB M-Chess Pro 3.12 from getting its Rook to the 8th Rank. Allowing this to happen is was proved to be disaster for DB Kasparov Gambit.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/6pp/8/P7/4B3/6Pp/8/kQ5K w - - 0 74[/fen]

AM68060 Sargon 3 had all sorts of trouble in this game as a result of playing a poor opening. By the time this postion was reached AM68060 Sargon 3 had somehow managed to get out of trouble and the game was level again. However DB M-Chess 1.71 blundered here with move 33. bxa5? Best move would have been 33. R8e7 with good chances.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/7p/5BqP/8/2k1qK2/8/8 w - - 0 74[/fen]

Although DB Socrates 3.0 had the advantage throughout this game, MAC Sigma Chess 4.02 made it really difficult for DB Socrates 3.0 to find a win. In the above endgame position DB Socrates 3.0 is up by two pawns but could never fgure out how to get out of being checked continuously.

DB Psion Chess 2.13 had a good game until now. In this position DB Psion Chess 2.13 strangely decides to sacrifice a Bishop for two pawns with the move 28. ... Bxd4?! which did not work out as planned. Best would have been retreating the Bishop with 28. ... Be7.

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/p1r4p/7R/2PbPp2/p4K1R/4B3/6r1/8 w - - 0 43[/fen]

Although DB Kallisto 1.83 is down by two pawns, DB Kallisto 1.83 has the initiative in this advanced White position with the correct move 43. Rd6 that must be played. DB Kallisto 1.83 however messed up by taking the pawn with 43. Kxf5? as this encouraged the immediate advance of W3X Chessmaster 4000 passed pawn with 43. ... a3! which was hard to stop after this mistake.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]4k3/4P3/4K3/2P2b1q/3q4/8/8/8 w - - 0 65[/fen]

The position is evenly balanced when DB Fritz 2 decides to hinder his own pieces by moving the King into the middle of board starting with 19. Ke2?! Strange play that gets punished by DB WChess 1.05.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]6k1/5p2/3b1K1p/7P/6p1/8/5r2/8 w - - 0 50[/fen]

https://lichess.org/HmUwr6ZW

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/8/4pp2/1pk5/5p1P/2Q1nP2/5r2/7K w - - 0 65[/fen]

DB Chess Genius 2 had sacrificed its Queen for a Rook and Knight. For a while in this game it looked as if this decision was going to pay off as DB Chess Genius 2 had some decent advantages. By the time this position is reached any advantages were gone and the best that DB Chess Genius 2 could do was to try and hold out for a draw. In the above position 65. ... Kd5! was the best move to keep things level. However from this position onward, DB Chess Genius 2 started to make small mistakes which DB Zarkov 2.61 capitalized on with its very mobile Queen.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/4k2Q/4r3/8/7K/8/8/8 w - - 0 84[/fen]

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/7p/2bk1N2/P3p1p1/2p1P1B1/b1P2K1P/6P1/8 w - - 0 39[/fen]

DB Fritz 1 had the best opportunities to win this game and I am a little surprised that DB Fritz 1 did not capitalize on those chances. In this position 38. a6! is really strong but DB Fritz 1 missed it playing 39. Nxh7 instead. In the resulting endgame it always seemed that DB Fritz 1 might error again but fortunately for DB Fritz 1 it managed to navigate through any traps DB Hiarcs 1.0 safely for a draw.

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]rnb1k2r/p1qp1ppp/1p6/3pP3/8/2B1QN2/PP3PPP/R3K2R w KQkq - 0 12[/fen]

DB Nimzo Guernica messed up early in the opening phase of the game and got beaten fairly easily after that. In this position DB Nimzo Guernica played what normally would be a natural move with 12. ... Bb7 but in this position it was a mistake, with 12. ... Ba6! being best to stop MAC MacChess 2.5 from castling. After 12. ... Bb7? MAC MacChess 2.5 played 13. Nd4 followed by Nf5 which created a lot of problems when you add the threat of the pawn advance to e6 to it.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/p2p4/1pn1p3/3p4/8/1R6/k4PP1/1Q2K3 w - - 0 43[/fen]

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]1qb1r2k/4N1bp/p1B3p1/4pp2/1B4n1/QP4PK/P2R4/8 w - - 0 31[/fen]

Although at first glance it seems that MAC Sargon 4 threatening to take the Rook on e8 has all the initiative. But MAC Sargon 4's King is also vulnerable to attack and the move 31. ... f4! actually gives Mephisto Atlanta a small advantage. Other moves worth looking at were 31. ... a5 and 31. ... Ne3. However in this complicated postion Mephisto Atlanta really messes up with the move 31. ... Bb7? and gets checkmated very quickly after the Bishop takes the Rook with 32. Bxe8.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]5B1k/6Q1/p5p1/4p3/6n1/1P4p1/P7/6K1 w - - 0 48[/fen]

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]8/1k4R1/p2K4/1p6/3B1n2/2P3p1/3r4/8 w - - 0 62[/fen]

DB Gandalf 2.1 for most of this game was ahead but could never figure out how to win it. In this position DB Gandalf 2.1 was trapped and the best it could do was accept a draw by 3x repetition and DB Gandalf 2.1 was one move away from it had it played 62. ... Kc8 again. DB Gandalf 2.1 thought about it and then changed its mind and played 62. ... Kb8?? and lost. The problem with DB Gandalf 2.1 is that it is a slow searcher and even at a Pentium 90 setting only searches about 5/6 ply deep most of the time which is just not enough against most of the strong competition in this tournament. W3X Arasan 2.0 suffers from the same problem they both just search too slowly and require more speed.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/5R2/1k1P4/8/3K4/8/8/8 w - - 0 79[/fen]

CRITICAL POSITION

W3X LChess 3.0 is weak and made this game too easy for Millennium Chess Genius Pro. The game is already lost in this position but best move would have been 26. Qe1 for W3X LChess 3.0. Playing 26. Ba6? just speeded up the inevitable attack and breakdown of W3X LChess 3.0's King's defense.

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]1r6/1r1n2k1/p2p4/3p4/p5p1/N1P3P1/PP1R2K1/1R6 w - - 0 31[/fen]

In this top of the table clash DB Rebel 6 Active comes out of the opening with a pawn advantage but has two sets of doubled pawns. Well the game was a grind with DB Rebel 6 Active skillfully developing its position and DB M-Chess Pro 3.12 defending hard. But in the end DB Rebel 6 Active gets a hard fought win.

FINAL POSITION

CRITICAL POSITION

[fen]rn2k2r/6b1/2ppq3/p2b1p1p/2BPnBpP/N5P1/PPQ2N2/1K1RR3 w kq - 0 21[/fen]

AM68060 Sargon 3 is up to its usual tricks, choosing a risky opening and getting away with it. This time it was a King's Gambit Accepted, Kieseritzky Gambit, Rubinstein Variation with DB Chess System Tal having a pretty decent advantage coming out of the opening. But as usual AM68060 Sargon 3 relying on its superior tactical strengths complicates the position and confuses its oppnent. By the time this position is reached, the game is level but DB Chess System Tal only has one decent move to keep things level which is 21. ... Na6! Everything else is not that good.

Since the position is so complicated with a load of traps and subtelties, DB Chess System Tal blunders with the move 21. ... Bxc4? and kicks of a series of combinations and pins that all favor AM68060 Sargon 3 who ends up winning comfortably.

FINAL POSITION

[fen]8/P7/8/8/7k/1K6/8/8 w - - 0 52[/fen]

I think it is just a matter of time when one of these risky openings is going to make AM68060 Sargon 3 fall flat on its face. But I have to say these games are a lot of fun to watch and play. It's like reliving the Adolf Anderssen era again.

Wow, that Sargon III move 24. Nxf5! That was beautiful. I wouldn't have found that move if you gave me a weekend to study that position.

You're right, that program is fun to watch play. The King's Gambit against a strong computer program...and won!

Nick

This is such a great tournament and with one of my all time favourites programs the Psion Chess doing quite well, I decided to change one of my Android ChessGenius piece sets to the old Psion Chess set. Funny thing is, I keep thinking that I am actually playing Psion and not ChessGenius!!
