talkchess not accessible from France

Post by xr_a_y »

Hi all,

This is Vivien (author of Minic). For 3 days now, french users cannot connect to talkchess anymore. We all have error 403, forbidden.

This is not a cache issue, nor a browser one. I also tried using a canadian proxy but this doesn't work. I suppose our providers is not blocking the site. I'm lost here, don't know what is happening.

Patrice, author of Cheese, has the same issue.

Any help is welcome !

Best regards

I spoke with Sam and he says some IP ranges have been blocked by the forum hosts to prevent hacking. He also says
you can tell the French members to send me their IPs (tcadmin@verizon.net) and I will forward them and see if we can get them unblocked. Thanks again --
This obviously applies to anyone having this problem.

It is not Sam doing the blocking it is the company that hosts the forum.

Hi everybody, checking if this account still works, it seems it does, I haven't been here in quite some time. Nice to see everybody here! Especially the New Yorkers as that is not a given with the Corona virus. But TalkChess from New York is 403 again, maybe if someone sends mail to Sam, can you add that Dutch accounts are probably also blocked, at least mine is :) No hurry.

The technician has thrown out almost the whole group.
The last one in the room makes the light off.

Unbelievable. To prevent hackers not to
attack, the whole group is out.

That's funny indeed.

They are celebrating their 40th year this year, the warehouse did not close although their physical store had to close being nonessential business. That is debatable if everybody has to stay in their homes :) You can get a 10% discount on any mail order: https://www.chessusa.com/

It does not look like ChessUSA are having big financial problems because of the crisis.

If you block most of the members, you shutdown the forum.
The excuse this is done because of hackers, is IMO not logical.

I doubt it will go online again.

We should better move the whole thing somewhere else to guarantee normal discussions.

We need a plan b.

We are dependant on ChessUSA and Quentin from ChessUSA and volunteers like Sam for all the technical support and hosting the board isn't free. I dont know why the host would do this. It is at least the second time so they know Sam has to repair everything by hand and anybody not aware what has happened or does not know the correct email, stays blocked. Advantage for Sam only that most spambots won't come back. But all commercial sites using this provider and getting the same blockade will lose customers. It might be even against the law in the US if they want to protect a free Internet for everyone. Every hacker with a little brain will use a VPN or something similar, I don't know much about the tech. Very strange that they do this repeatedly. Maybe they don't like their customers.
