Thanks for the tip re D-Fend. I'll see what I can arrange re a dropbox for the disk. Do you need the driver disks too? (I think they're mainly to interface the chess engines to the Universal Chess Board.)
Cheers,

I have all of the disks and will gladly share. Unfortunately, I have Windows 10, and even with setting compatibility mode to Windows 95, Win10 64-bit cannot install the program, so I can't even tell what version I have. The wchess.exe date is Jan 9, 1995 (if that helps). Here's the directory listing of that disk:

If you think this could be the version you're looking for, let me know and we'll find a way to get a copy to you. (I doubt that copying a program from 1995 violates anybody's copyright, even if researchers were able to find the copyright holder.)

Hi JeffB!

Unafortunaly, your version is, probably, the 1.05, already available.
I can send a working version to you!
Using DOS-Box you can use it in Windows 10!

I say it because the .exe file size! Exactly the same size of the 1.05 version.
In an old advertise from an German chess store, is said that the version in Saphire packet was 1.06... And there are many other sources quoting it!
But... Nobody really knows if there was really an 1.06 version!

Best regards JeffB!

I'll put zip files of the discs on a shared drive by the end of the upcoming week and share the link with interested folks.

Thanks for the tip and offer, Liston. I don't anticipate needing to run this. The only reason I tried to run it was to determine the version number.
Cheers,

Hi,
I also have version 1.05, size WCHESS.EXE 214,637. Just another date 24-04-1995.
This version is free on the Internet.

I suppose that Wchess 1.6 (AKA 1.06) was released as WB / UCI engine only and could be used in Arena GUI; I have it on my PC.

Yes, this is the version which I posted in the CCC-forum a few years ago.
I've removed the copyprotection from the original file, and I got the permission from David Kittinger to publish this modified version.

The date of WCHESS.EXE is not the date when the program was compiled, but the date of the first installation: when you install WChess you're asked for your name, and this name is written into the installed WCHESS.EXE, so of course the date changes with every installation.

Well, as already mentioned this version is available on different internet sites, so I don't need to re-upload it again.

No, I've also never seen a DOS version 1.06 of WChess, and l share IvenGo's opinion, that the 1.06 means in fact the WB-version 1.6.

The Legend of WChess 1.06:

There are many references to the 1.06 version!
Defunct site Gambitsoft...
Some of them explicitly citing "MS-Dos version"
But, is fact, apparently nobody have [or had] it!

There are actually 3 "relived" (using the Huber method) versions of WChess.
And 1 or 2 private versions 3.02 (it's a fact) & 3.03 (possibly) never shared!
Thus if really there was a 1.06 version, it's was very probably a very rare version!

Recently, I could find a interesting adverting from a very famous German chess store (https://www.schachversand.de/de/sapphir ... novag.html) about Novag's Saphire II Deluxe, explicitly saying "WChess 1.06 included"... it was a Saphire special limited edition...

Thus, I devoted to defeat the infamous "Huber's Conjecture"...

Never there was one 1.06 version!
The "version" 1.06 is only the engine version 1.6...

I could find 3 people with that limited rare edition!
Steve Blincoe can't find his WChess diskette, an spanish guy from Guadalajara city (near Madrid) have his diskett, but is away from foruns by now...
And JeffB has apparently (with 99.9999% ) the 1.05 version...

Are all WChess on Sapphire II Delluxe just 1.05 version?
Maybe...

Apparently "Huber's Conjecture" is reinforced! :(

But maybe one day a member here receives a private message...
"The Huber's Conjecture was Wrong!"

I still searching for the Graal...

Best regards, Liston :D

Better than running it on Windows is running it on android mobile phones,
That allows you to have your beloved programs with you in your trousers.
What seems like a fairy tale today may be reality tomorrow.
Here we have a fairy tale of the day after tomorrow....
